STRONTIUM-90 CONTENT OF HUMAN PLACENTA AND BONE OF THE NEWBORN
Results are reported relating to a research program begun in 1958 to follow the Sr/sup 90/ levels in human bone. At the beginning of this study the average level in bone was 1.07 pc/g Ca. In 1959 the level rose considerably, then declined in 1960 and 1961. Incorporation of the isotope in humans of different ages was studied, particularly in the fetus and newborn which have high incorporation rates because of new bone formation, Sr/sup 90/ being incorporated at the same rate as Ca. The Sr content of the fetus was found to be higher than that of the mother, in spite of the fact that all fetal nutrition is provided through the mother. Analysis of 120 placentas showed a mean value of 1.05 pc Sr/sup 90/; the level in bone of newborn infants was 0.88 pc. These levels in bone were related to changes in the Sr/sup 90/ levels in milk in Germany during this period. (H.H.D.)
