FUNDAMENTAL AND APPLIED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN METALLURGY. Progress Report, February 1963

Technical Report ·

Zone refining was completed on a 6-pass beryllium crystal. Machining of 6 compression samples of various purity levels was completed, and compression tests were made on 4 of these specimens. Machining also progressed on tensile and resistance ratio specimens from a 12-pass zone-refined crystal. Nb--2 at.% Re and Nb--5 at.% Re alloys were successfully hot rolled at 1000 c- C to 0.1-in. strip and Ta and Ta--2 at.% Ru were cold rolled to 0.05-in. strip. Hardnesses of Mo and Ta alloys were measured at 1000, 1100, and 1200 c- C. In work to develop uranium-base alloys strengthened by SLIS techniques, approximately 200 g of splatcooled U-- 1.2 wt% Cu were hot consolidated and a preliminary metallographic and hot-hardness evaluation carried out on the consolidated product. A workable process was developed for extruding tungsten tubing to size. (M.C.G.)
