FUNDAMENTAL AND APPLIED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN METALLURGY. Progress Report to United States Atomic Energy Commission for the Month of May 1963

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4674199
Zone refining of a beryllium crystal containing iron and silicon impurity additions was completed. Final refinements of the compression test method were made. Extrusion techniques for Re--Ta--W and Ru-- Ta-W alloys were developed. Finishing of niobium--rhenium alloys by rolling was accomplished. Electron and light microscopy examinations were made on copper-uranium alloys in order to determine the particle size, shape, and density as a function of thermal history. Splat-cooled uranium intended to contain about 700 to 800 ppm carbon was preduced and consolidated by hot compaction at 600 deg C. An extensive metallographic examination of extruded and drawn tungsten tubing was made and evaluated. (N.W.R.)
