FETAL DISTRUBANCES DUE TO RADIATION (NEUTRON, X RAY, AND Cs$sup 137$)

Journal Article · · Hiroshima Journal of Medical Sciences (Japan)
OSTI ID:4698111
Pregnant female mice were irradiated on the 4th to 15th day of gestation by 120- and 200-rad doses of 180-kvp x rays or 30- and 90-rad doses of 14.1-Mev neutrons. Other pregnant mice were injected with 2- and 4-4mmC/g doses of Cs/sup 137/ to give 4-day doses of 60 and 120 rad. Developmental anomalies were seen in the fetuses of all groups except the controls and those receiving 120-rad neutron doses. These anomalies included cerebral hernia, umbilical hernia, ruptured abdomen, abnormal tail, and abnormal spine. Death and resorption of embryos occurred in nearly all of the animals receiving 200-rad x-ray and 90-rad neutron doses, compared with a control level of 25%, and the highest incidence occurred when irradiation was carried out between the 9th and 12th day of gestation. Cs/ sup 137/ was most damaging to the fetus when administered on the 4th day, but its effect did not increase with the higher dose. Sex ratio of the fetuses was not altered by x or neutron irradiation, but males showed a preponderance in the Cs/ sup 137/ group. The size and wt of fetuses were lower than normal in the x-ray and neutron groups, and postnatal deaths (up to the 21st day of life) were significantly increased with all 3 kinds of irradiation. Wt gain was lower after birth in all 3 irradiated groups compared with controls. (H.H.D.)
