THE ACTION OF X IRRADIATION ON EMBRYONIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE MOUSE (in German)

Pregnant mice were irradiated on the 5th to 13th day of gestation by a single, whole-body, 200-r dose of x rays, and fetal mortality and anomalies were investigated. Irradiation had least influence on the developing organism when given at early or late developmental stages; little effect was noted in fetuses irradiated on the 5th or 13th day of gestation. Almost 100% of the fetuses showed deformities when irradiated on the 7th to 11th days, the 11th day being the most critical time of exposure. Resorption of fetuses reached a max of 60% between the 7th and 9th days of gestational exposure. Max incidence of deformities of the brain occurred after irradiation on day 7.5 (54% incidence), of eye on day 7.5 (78%), of nose and snout on day 8 (39%), spinal cord on day 7.5 (1.2%), sternum on day 6 (4%), extremities on day 11 (9%), feet on day 11 (97%), tail on day 10 (87%), abdomen on day 7.5 (22%), and thorax on day 7 (1.7%). Thus the nervous system is most sensitive to radiation at an early stage of organogenesis (7--8th day of gestation), while the skeletal development is most sensitive later (11th day). Greatest impairment of fetal wt. was observed after irradiation on the 11th day; in this case wt. of 18-day fetuses was only 80% of that of nonirradiated controls. These results are very similar to those previously obtained in the rat. (H.H.D.)
