Aspects of seismology are examined in terms of developing means for differentiating between natural occurrences and underground explosions. Topics discussed are detection problems, Project Vela, studies of the outer mantle, data handling and processing, British earthquakes, explosion seismology, body waves in the earth, surface waves and free oscillations, investigation of focal mechanism by flrst motion data, coupling of explosions to the ground, decoupled explosions, model studies, seismometer arrays and boreholes, microseisms, wide-band seismographs, and observatory seismology. 35 references.
