From 10th Harold Jeffreys lecture; London, Eng. (8 Dec 1972). The application of seismology to the detection of distant nuclear explosions is discussed in the context of international attempts to find an acceptable formula for a cemprehensive ban on nuclear weapons tests including underground explosions. The importance of establishing a completely reliable system, not only for detecting violations of a treaty but for distinguishing underground explosions from earthquakes, is emphasized. Examples are given of the preblems of measurement and interpretation of results, using P-waves and Rayleigh waves. The effect of rock structures on the paths of the seismic waves is discussed, and current models of the Earth are examined in relation to seismology. (UK)
