PROPHYLACTIC STIMULATION OF THROMBOCYTOPOIESIS AND DEVELOPMENT OF HEMORRHAGIC SYNDROME DURING EXPOSURE TO IONIZING RADIATION

Injections of Difacil, a cholinolytic compound, stimulate thrombocytopoiesis in healthy guinea pigs. The administration of repeated courses of Difacil injections (up to and including 4 courses) lead to a more prolonged period of maintenance of the raised platelet count in the peripheral blood. The administration of 2 and 3 prophylactic courses of Difacil injections to guinea pigs irradiated in a dose of 200 r decreases the severity of thrombocytopenia during the course of radiation sickness. The manifestations of hemorrhagic diathesis were less apparent in the guinea pigs that received prophylactic injections of Difacil than in the animals that received irradiation only. Not only does the prophylactic adnninistration of Difacil to guinea pigs before irradiation delay the development of thrombocytopenia and decrease the degree of hemorrhagic diathesis, but it also to some extent prevents the early death of the animals.
