INFLUENCE OF THE WHOLE-BODY EXPOSURE TO X-RADIATION ON THE RENEWAL PROCESS OF THE CORNEAL EPITHELIUM (in Russian)

In order to clarify the effect of radiation injury on the mitotic activity changes, male white mice were exposed to doses of 100, 400, and 700 r of whole-body x radiation, at a dose rate of 20 r/min. The exposed and the control animals were killed 1, 3, 6, or 7 days after the exposure; as nearly all the animals died by the seventh day, no reliable data are available for this period. Cornea preparations were used for determining the mitosia and chromosome abberations. Analysis of the phase distribution of the mitosia served as an indicator of the radiation effects because it affects the time relations between the individual phases of the mitosis. During the first few days after exposure when the mitotic activity is greatly depressed, a definite lowering of the activity was observed. Its subsequent increase, in the case of exposure to doses of 100 and 400 r, occurs in parallel with the regeneration of the mitotic activity; after exposure to 700 r, it passes through a maximum between the first and third day after irradiation. This indicates that in that case, as in the case of the corneal epitheleum of unirradiated animals, the main cause of the cell reaction is due to the repeated replacement by cells formed during the cell fission. The divergent results obtained in the case of exposure to 700 r are probably due to the destruction of the cell by the radiation. (TTT)
