METHOD FOR PREPARING UO$sub 2$ OF DEFINITE GRAIN SIZE
A method is given for preparing UO/sub 2/ of definite grain size. A hot watery solution in which there are 0.4 g-ion per liter of uranyl ions, nitrate ions, and urea is stirred until homogeneity is achieved, then a homogeneous precipitation is performed, and at last the solid material is quickly separated from the still hot fluid and transformed into UO/sub 2/. In order to achieve a predetermined definite grain size, the precipitation has to take place in a solution which contains 10O to 200 g per liter urea and a nitrate ion concentration of less than 1.8 g-ions per liter, and which is at a temperature of less than 100 deg C, preferably 90 deg to 98 deg C. The resulting UO/sub 2/ grains can be heated in an atmosphere of water vapor whereby the structure of the particles is not changed. (Gmelin Inst.)
