METHOD FOR REDUCING TETRAVALENT PLUTONIUM TO TERVALENT PLUTONIUM, ESPECIALLY IN CONNECTION WITH A SEPARATION OF PLUTONIUM FROM URANIUM

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4718613

The method described is for the reduction of tetravalent plutonium to tervalent plutonium and it enables the simultaneous separation of plutonium and uranium. The reduction is effected by ascorbic acid in the presence of a nitric acid agent. If a water solution of a nitric acid is added to a solution consisting of an organic solvent and Pu(IV), in which eventually a certain amount of uranyl nitrate is dissolved, the Pu(IV) is reduced by the ascorbic to Pu(III), the latter being transposed into the watery solution.
