The Extraction of Uranium and Plutonium from Nitric Acid Solutions by Tertiary Amines

Journal Article · · Radiochimica Acta

In the extraction of Pu(IV) nitrate from uranium containing aqueous solutions by means of long chain tertiary amines, the partition coefficient of Pu(IV) is influenced by the concentration of nitric acid, uranyl nitrate, and by the concentration of the amine in the diluent. At high urarium concentration extraction of Pu(IV) ceases to be dependent upon the nitric acid molarity. The existence of a competitive effect between U and Pu is shown. The effect of the chemical composition of the amine-diluent system on the urarium-plutonium separation factor is briefly discussed.
