A method is given for producing UO/sub 2/ powder comprising the steps of precipitating UO/sub 2/ from a solution of uranyl nitrate, with the help of hydrogen peroxide, neutralizing free acid by adding ammonia, and calcinating and reducing the powder. The UO/sub 2/ powder produced by this method is especially suited for the fabrication of fuel elements by hammer-treatment. (Gmelin Institute)
