DECONTAMINATION OF THE ALLIS-CHALMERS VOLUTE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4694481
The relative effectiveness of Alconox scrubbing, electrolytic Johnny- mop'' decontamination, and alkaline permanganate ammonium citrate (APAC) decontamination was investigated during decontamination of the Allis-Chalmers volute at PWR. Electrolytic decontamination proved to be most effective, reducing internal gamma radiation levels of the volute by an average D.F. (decontamination factor = initial radiation level/final radiation level) of 33 against a D.F. in the range of one for Alconox scrubbing and an average D.F. of 11 for APAC decontamination. Smear activity levels were reduced by an average D.F. of 80 as a result of electrolytic cleaning against a D.F. of four for Alconox scrubbing and three for APAC decontamination. Electrolytic decontamination followed by scrubbing with Alconox and water produced the best overall D. F. (auth)
