STUDIES ON THE BIOLOGICAL PREVENTION OF ACUTE RADIATION INJURY. I. PREVENTION WITH HOMOGENATES OF ORGANS AND TISSUES OBTAINED FROM IRRADIATED ANIMALS

Homogenates of heart, liver, spleen, kidney, adrenal, testis, and femoral muscle were prepared after irradiation of 40-day-old male mice with 800-r doses of Co/sup 60/ gamma rays. Homogenates were similarly prepared from nonirradiated mice organs, and like the 1st preparations, were injected intraperitoneally in 0.1-, 0.2-, and 0.3-ml doses at weekly intervals in mice irradiated with 800 r. Such whole-body irradiation was given 1 week or 24 hr after the last 3 weekly, injections of homogenate. Significant radioprotection was provided by the injected homogenates and that obtained from irradiated animals was slightly more protective than that from controls. Irradiated, uninjected mice showed only, a 30% 30-day survival rate. This was increased to 70% in mice injected with homogenates of irradiated organs 1 week after irradiation of the recipients and to 80% when it was injected 24 hr after irradiation, in contrast to 70% when control homogenate was injected at 24 hr. The homogenates were well tolerated in the recipient mice and did not interfere with growth. The body weight gain of irradiated surviving mice was greater after injection of the homogenates. (H.H.D.)
