SEPARATION OF CARRIER FREE LANTHANUM 140 FROM BARIUM 140

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4693957
A new method is described for obtaining a continual supply of carrier free La/sup 140/ from its parent Ba/sup 140/, following the Brookhaven milking method for obtaining Y/sup 90/ from Sr/sup 90/. The Ba/sup 140/ is fixed on a cation exchange resin and La/sup 140/ is milked with a 0.5% citric acid solution at pH 5.5. A purity better than 10/sup 5/ as the ratio of disintegrations of La/ sup 140//disintegrations of Ba/sup 140/ is obtained. The distribution coefficients of La/sup 140/ and Ba/sup 140/ on the resin were determined as well as the yield of La/sup 140/. In addition a simple and rapid test for detecting the presence of Ba/sup 140/ contamination in the La/sup 140/ was also developed. (auth)
