Chromatographic separation of carrier-free {sup 89}Sr and {sup 140}Ba

Journal Article · · Radiochemistry
OSTI ID:136027
Calculated and experimental data are used to develop a chromatographic process employing cation exchanger KU-2 to isolate and separate carrier Pb, {sup 89}Sr, and {sup 140}Ba-{sup 140}La from reprocessing solutions of irradiated U targets in order to obtain radiochemically pure radionuclide solutions. The separated components are selectively eluted by solutions of sodium lactate, EDTA, and HNO{sub 3}. The optimal separation conditions are found. The effects of the amount of carrier Pb and the complexant concentrations on the effectiveness of the radionuclide separation process are studied. A method is developed for separating carrier Pb from {sup 89}Sr and {sup 140}Ba-{sup 140}La on VPK cation exchanger. Carrier-free solutions of {sup 89}Sr and {sup 140}Ba are produced.
