The reactor has a pressure vessel closed at its front with a removable cover. In order to replace the fuel elements, the ship is introduced into a chamber provided with biological shielding, and the bow of the ship is then removed with the aid of an overhead traveling bridge placed within the chamber. The biological shield separating reactor and ship's bow and the pressure vessel cover are then removed for access to the reactor fuel elements. (NPO)
