A gas-cooled reactor for use in ship propulsion is designed with a biological shield which allows access to the cortrol rod drive mechanisms, pressure vessel head, etc., and which facilitates direct fueling and refueling, The biological shield, which is located above the core and has holes for control rods and fuel elements, comprises alternating layers of steel and graphite.
