A skirt support for a structure of curved section, e.g., a reactor pressure vessel, is designed in which the stresses due to thermal gradients in the support are reduced by heating means. The heating means may be an electric heater, bridge pieces between vessel and skirt for creating pockets, heat transfer surfaces, or conductive plates connected between vessel and skirt.
