PRODUCTION OF RADIOISOTOPES BY JRR-1 REACTOR. IV. TEST PRODUCTION OF Na- 24, K-42, Au-198, AND OTHERS (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4692380
The radioisotopes Na-24, K-42, Au-198, and others were produced on a trial basis in reactor JRR-1. Sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate, and gold wire were used as target materials. Irradiations were carried out for 2 or 15 hours intermittently in JRR-1 in a thermal flux of about 2 to 3 x 10/sup 11/ n/cm/ sup 2//sec. The target materials are enclosed in the polyethylene sheet and packed into the screw type capsules, made of 2S aluminum. As for chemical processing, the irradiated target materials are only dissolved in appointed concentrated hydrochloric acid in case of Na-24 and K-42, and in aqua regia in case of Au-198. The apparatus was simple, consisting of a glass dissolver, sampling pipettes, and solenoid valves or Teflon stopcocks, connected together by glass tubing. The production was carried out several times, the maximum activities of products were 50, 30, and 160 mC for Na-24, K-42, and Au-198, respectively, and their specific activity was approximates 25 mC per g of Na, approximates 2 mC per g of K, and approximates 200 mC per g of Au.
