SYSTEM FOR DETERMINING THE RADIOACTIVITY OF GAS SOLS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4691794

A system for determining the radioactivity of gas sols is described for when at least part of the radioactivity is due to presence of radon and thoron associated with the sols. The system consists of a selective absorption means through which the radiation passes piior to detection and the joint absorption capacities for either alpha or beta type of radiation are such that the ratio between the detected beta particles and alpha particles for the daughter products of radon corresponds to that for the daughter products of thoron. If, in determining the radioactivity of a gas sol, the ratio between the detected beta particles and alpha particles is different from the ratio for radon and thoron daughters, then there is radiation resulting from other contamination present.
