MODE AND DEVICE FOR THE DETECTION OF FISSION PRODUCTS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4691672
A method of detecting fission products having radioactive daughters involves introducing the fission products into a precipitation chamber. Here the daughters are formed and precipitated onto an electrode surface covered with a film of a liquid adapted to transfer them out of the chamber to a detecting device (a scintillation counter). Preferably, the precipitation chamber has two vertically disposed plate shaped porous electrodes that face each other and form between them an interspace. The other surfaces of the electrodes are in contact with pressurized phases that can diffuse through the corresponding porous electrodes and form liquid films at the other sides, The liquid diffusing through one electrode incorporates the fission products, while the other one is a clean rinsing liquid. The fission products diffusing from its liquid film decay into the daughter products that are precipitated on the film of the rinsing liquid flowing downwards over the precipitation electrode and finally dropping into a pool from which it is led to the detection device.
