THE PRACTICAL USE OF THE RAILWAY SIGNALING SYSTEM UTILIZING RADIOISOTOPES (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4689365
A new railway signaling system using radioisotopes was investigated. Studies were made on durability against vibration, temperature, and dampness of the new equipment by use of the trains fitted with the radioisotopes. A halogenquenched G-M counter was installed between rails at each position corresponding to the entrance and the exit of the crossing. Each counter was connected to an electronic circuit involving a relay. When the train fitted with the Co/sup 60/ source passed over the entrance, the counting rate of the G-M counter rapidly increased, activating the relay. When the train passed the exit, the relay was reset. Relay actions of the traditional signaling system and the new signaling system were recorded together by the electronic recorder over three months, and the results were examined in detail. With the testing terms used, the maximum temperature of the G-M counter reached 51 deg C and that of electronic circuits 43 deg C. (P.C.H.)
