RAILWAY SIGNALLING SYSTEMS USING RADIOISOTOPES LOCATED ON TRACKS AND THE CONTINUATIVE CHECKING OF THEIR ACTIONS BY COSMIC RAY BACKGROUND RADIATION (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Genshiryoku Kogyo (Japan)
OSTI ID:4039058
Preliminary tests on several types of radioisotope signalling systems are reported, including an axle counter, a recorder of the interception of gamma rays by passing trains, and a Bremsstrahlung detector utilizing absorption of / sup 90/Sr radiation by passing trains. A radiation-reflection train detector was also tested as an approach signal for highspeed trains. The device uses gamma rays scattered from a passing train to activate a relay located beside the /sup 137/Cs source. For fail-safe operation, a system of duplicate Geiger counters and circuits is used to feed cosmic-ray background pulses to a monitoring relay, which gives a warning indication of the failure of a Geiger tube or circuit.
