RADIOISOTOPES IN RADIATION PROCESSED FOODS. Final Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4689313
No positive evidence of induced radioactivity was detected in canned pork, beef, ham, chicken, or bacon irradiated with Co/sup 60/ gamma radiation or electrons below 12 Mev. At and above 12 Mev, the isotopes Sc/sup 47/, Xe/sup 133/, Mn/sup 54/, Sc /sup 4 Na/sup 24/, and Sc/sup 48/ were detected and identified by use of a whole-body counter, gamma -ray-spectrometric analysis, and analysis for BETA -emitting isotopes. Digested samples of the irradiated foods and controls were also analyzed. No increase in BETA emitters was detected in foods irradiated at energies below 12 Mev. (C.H.)
