RADIOACTIVE FALLOUT. Annual Progress Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4689308
Isotope ratio data revealed the effect of chemical fractionation of bomb- produced fission products in the atmosphere. The Tc/sup 99/ content of rain water increased from 2 450 deg C in a 1 to 44 450 deg C in a 6 m c from 1961 to 1962. The tracer Cd/sup 109/ added in the U. S. high-altitude test of July 8, 1962, could not be detected in rain at Fayetteville, Arkansas, during September 1962. An inverse relationship was observed between the concentration of radiostrontium and the rate of rainfall within a given air mass. Pronounced peaks were observed in Ce/sup 144/ in samples of rain water collected in 1960 and 1961. (C.H.)
