THE USE OF RADIOISOTOPES AND RADIATIONS (in French)

Three typical industrial applications of radioisotopes are described. The enamel thickness in sanitary equipments was determined by introduction of Na/ sup 24/ in aqueous solution into the enamel and measuring the emitted BETA and gamma radiation of 1.30 Mev and 1.37 Mev, respectively, with an end-window Geiger counter. A 0.2-mm thick layer could be determined in 5 sec with a precision of 10% provided the radioactive additive is at least at a 150 mu c/l level. A warning system, actuated by a 100 mu C source of Sr/sup 90/, and using a collimator and Geiger counter with amplifier and integrator is described for the prevention of turbine stoppages of ships by detecting displacements of the turbine rotor axis. The filling level of a blast-furnace was controlled by placing 760-mC Co/sup 60/ gamma sources at 3 different places in the furnace mouth and adjusting 5 Geiger tubes opposite the sources in such a way that 5 different levels could be indicated. Five iights on the furnace operator's control board were actuated by a relay system of the Geiger counters giving at every instant the filling level corresponding to the location of sources and detectors.
