In view of the changes induced by ionizing radiation in the functional activity of the thyroid tissue that regulates the basal metabolism of the organism, it was attempted to determine the reparative regeneration of the skeletal muscles by the local irradiation of tbls gland. Male adult rats were used for the tests that involved the study of the traumatic regeneration of the muscle after a local irradiation of the thyroid by 1000 r of x radiation at time periods of 5 and 30 days after the exposure, determining the response to a cutting with a razor blade. It was found that the irradiation causes dystrophic changes, lowering the activity of the gland. The changes continue to increase from the 3rd day on; during the period from the 7th to the 10th day, at the height of the radiation sickness the formation of colloids and their introduction into the blood is considerably reduced. This is followed by a period of regeneration; after 30 days the gland operates nearly normal, although some radiation effects persist. The condition of the regenerative process varies with the time period after the irradiation. (TTT)
