Corn seeds of the Sterling variety were given a stimulating dose of 500 r, and a lethal dose of 40,000 r in a Co/sup 60/ irradiator. The peroxidase activity was determined separately in the corymb, kernel, and endosperm on the 2, 4, 6, 8, and 13th day of growth. The highest peroxidase activity was observed in the corymb with a somewhat smaller amount in the kernel, and very little peroxidase in the endosperm. A 500 r dose show s a 12 and 17% increase in peroxidase activity on the 2nd and 4th days of growth as compared to the activity of this enzyme in the kernels of the control seedlings. The peroxidase activity then gradually drops to a level which is 70 to 82% of the activity in the kernels of the control seedlings. On irradiating the corn seeds with a lethal dose of 40,000 r, the peroxidase activity showed decreases of 43 and 73% of the activities in the kernels of the controls on the 2nd and 4th days oi growth, respectively. Then, the activity increased sharply to 167% on the 6th day, 211% on the 8th day, and 341% on the 13th day of growth, where the seedling finally died. (TTT)
