Bone sarcomas were induced in rats by the intraperitoneal injection of two doses of Sr/sup 90/ at monthly intervals using a dosage of 0.32 mu C of Sr/ sup 90/ per gram of body weight. The sarcomas appeared in 15 out of 60 rats on the 170th to 200th day after injection of the injection of the Sr/sup 90/. Induced sarcom as were given a local x-ray dose of 9 kr and 18 kr. With an irradiation dose of 18 kr, growth of the sarcoma is retarded, and the parts of the tumor where formation of osteoid material occurs are almost completely destroyed. With a dose of 9 kr, the tumor continues to grow, and the destruction is less marked. Cancer cells from the irradiated sarcoma can be transplanted. However, in the transplanted tumor, the cells lose their ability to metastasize to other sites, to lyse osseous tissue, and to form osteoid materiai. Changes in the size and form of the mitochrondria snd the shell nucleus of the cells were observed after x-ray irradiation of the bone sarcoma. (TTT)
