EXPERIMENTS IN JOULE HEATING OF PLASMA IN A STRONG MAGNETIC FIELD (in Russian)

A pulsed electrodeless deuterium discharge with lifetime of 5--7 mu sec in a strong longitudinal magnetic field was studied. It is shown that in the first stage of the discharge anomalously rapid losses of charged particles from the plasma take place. The average containment time of the electrons was usually 600 mu sec. The electrical characteristics of the discharge are observed to oscillate. The amplitude of these oscillations increases noticeably when the electron-density curve passes through a maximum. The possible mechanisms for the appearance of such oscillations as well as the mechanisms for charged particle losses are discussed. The ion temperature determined by the Doppler broadening of the hydrogen spectral lines increases in the course of the first stage of the process and by the beginning of the second stage reaches 20 ev. The electron temperature measured by the ratio of the 0 IV to 0 V spectral line intensities has approximately the same value. During the second stage of the discharge, the concentration of charged particles in the central region of the column is either maintained approximately constant or increases slightly. The electron density on the periphery of the plasma column is smaller than 10/sup 12/ cm/sup -3/. At the same time, an increase of the electron temperature, determined from the plasma electrical conductivity, is observed. Special coils permitted alteration of the configuration of the longitudinal magnetic field in the region of the diaphragms. The influence of these perturbations on the characteristics of the discharge during the various stages of the process was investigated. (auth)
