Spectroscopic Measurements of Electrodeless Ring Discharges; SPEKTROSKOPISCHE MESSUNGEN AN EINER ELEKTRODENLOSEN RINGENTLADUNG

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4836304
Spectroscopic measurements of ignition time, electron temperature and density, ionization rate, and impurity concentration were made during an electrodeless ring discharge of a hydrogen plasma at initial pressures of 50 and 230 mu . Observations of the emitted light show that the ignition at 230 mu occurs in the first half wave and at 50 mu in the second half wave of the oscillating magnetic field. The electron temperature was found to show an oscillating pattern at both pressures, with a maximum of 27,000 deg K for 50 mu and 25,000 deg K for 230 deg . In both cases, the first maximum is attained after 1.6 deg sec. The periodic pattern of the electron density was also determined at 230 deg ; a maximum of l.4 x l0/sup 16/ cm/sup -3/ was reached at 3 mu sec after the beginning of the discharge. The ionization rate was determined to have a Iower limit of 50%. The impurities were found to consist of 0.03% O/sub 2/ and 0.02% C. The effect of the impurities on the electron temperature is small.
