A polar surface is considered ideai when it is equipotential at infinite distance and allows the production, in the median plan, of the specific magnetic induction in nuclear apparatus with weak or strong focusing. The final polar surface, at infinite distance, can be obtained by modifying the boundaries of the ideal polar surface, experimentally or by the relaxation method. The general analytical expression of the ideal poiar surface and simpler formulas necessary in current practice were established as a function of the principal parameters of the apparatus and of the calculation error permitted. The same expressions are valid both for strong- and weakfocusing particle acceierators and for devices used for the dispersion of charged particles. In order to iilustrate the method, it is shown that the equations of ideal polar surfaces are applicable to strong- or weak-focusing devices (particle accelerators and spectrometers). (tr-auth)
