PRODUCTION AND USE OF IODINE-125

The procedures for production of I/sup 125/ by neutron activation of xenon in relatively pure form are outlined. The pertinent dose calculations for the use of I/sup 125/ in thyroid and liver scanning are presented, and the advantages of I/sup 125/ from the point of view of long half life, increased tolerable isotope dosage, reduced radiation dosage, and improved scanning resolution are illustrated. While many of these advantages cannot be fully exploited without special detectors, they appear to be great enough to justify the substitution of I/sup 125/ for /I/sup 131/ in many instances using available commercial detection equipment.
