CLINICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES WITH I-125: THE USES OF Na$sup 125$I, $sup 125$I-ROSE BENGAL AND $sup 125$I-HIPPURAN TO INCREASE THE RESOLUTION OF SCINTIGRAM AND MICRO-AUTORADIOGRAPHY (in Japanese)
Clinical and experimental studies using I/sup 125/ are compared with I/ sup 131/. The counting rate profiles across box phantoms containing wax plugs representing the cold nodules were obtained using two-centimeter slit collimators. A wax plug on the phantom surface produced a smaller reduction in counting rate for I/sup 125/ than for I/sup 131/. The smallest detectable cold nodules in thyroid and liver phantoms were estimated. For the thyroid phantom a cold nodule under 5 mm in diameter was detectable with I/sup 125/, while a 1.5 cm diameter was required with I/sup 131/. For the liver phantom a cold nodule on the surface which was invisible using I/sup 131/ was detected using I/sup 125/. In clinical studies 11 cases of thyroid scans, 18 cases of I/sup 125/ rose bengal liver scans, and one of I/sup 125/ hippuran renal scan were made and compared with I/ sup 131/ thyroid and liver scans and Hg/sup 203/ neohydrin renal scan. In all cases a marked increase in contrast was shown with I/sup 125/. Very high resolution, comparable to Ha, was obtained in microautoradiography of rabbit's thyroid glands, livers, and kidneys using sodium I/sup 125/, I/sup 125/, rose bengal, and I/sup 125/, hippuran From these results the advantages in substituting I/sup 125/ for I/sup 131/ in nuclear medicine were discussed.
