Although the therapeutic action of the bone marrow in the treatment of irradiated animals is mostly due to the repopulation of the donor's cells in the body of the recipient, it is possible that the decomposition products of the introduced cells stimulate the blood formation. It was noted that during the first days after the introduction of the bone marrow suspensions, a stimulating action was exerted on the reticular cells of the recipient's bone marrow. This effect might be due to desoxvnucleoproteid or to DNA of the animal's bone marrow cells, the therapeutic effect of DNA introduced into various tissues of animals affected by radiation sickness was investigated. Rats of both sexes were exposed to 1000 r of gamma radiation of Co/sup 60/ at a dose rate of 20 r/min, administering within 24 hours after the exposure 3 to 6 mg of specially prepared, highmolecular DNA in 1 to 2 ml of physiological solution intravenously or intraperitoneally; unirradiated but injected animals served as controls. Results indicated that the isologous, high-molecular preparation had a high therapeutic effectiveness. The survival rate jumped from 2 to 13% level in the control group to 40 to 58%. Factors affecting the DNA preparation reduced its effectiveness. The effect is probably due to the phagocytosis of the DNA par ticles and Noneof the desoxyribNoneoNonenucNoneleoNoneproteid by the reticular cells of the blood. (TTT)
