PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF ETHYLPALMITATE ON X-IRRADIATED MICE (in German)

An ethyl ester of palmitic acid (ethylpalmitate) increased the survival rate of x irradiated mice, if it was injected intravenously in small doses 24 to 72 hours before irradiation. This protective effect could be shown also by measuring the effect on body weight after irradiation. The radiation protective effect of the ethylpalmitate was obtained at 25 to 100 mg/animal; it was dose dependent and increased with increasing dose. The toxicity of ethylpalmitate was tested using non-irradiated mice. The mortality increased from about 5% to 85% in the dose range of 25 to 100 mg/animal; female animals were more sensitive than male ones. Purest ethylpalmitate was more toxic than ethylpalmitate of less purity. The problem is discussed whether chemical splenectomy caused by the ethylpalmitate is responsible for the radiation protection effect of this substance. (auth)
