PRODUCTION OF STRANGE PARTICLES BY $pi$$sup +$-p COLLISIONS AT 2.08 Gev/c

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/4685785· OSTI ID:4685785
The total cross section 10.72 mb) obtained for the interaction is much higher than that previously observed at 1.39 Bev/c, but SIGMA /sup +/-K/sup +/ production is weaker. Cross sections for the interactions producing strange particles are listed. The SIGMA /sup +/ singular distribution shows a strong backward tendency for the hyperon. The effective mass distributions for pi /sup +/ -- p yields LAMBDA /sup o/ + K/sup +/ + pi /sup o/ indicate a LAMBDA - pi resonance (/sup */) with a mass and width of 1382 plus or minus 4 Mev and 28 Mev. The Y/sup */ decay seems to be independent of the production, andd the andgular distributions of Y/sup */ decay snd production support a spin assignment>1/2. In the SIGMA /sup +/ + K + pi /sup o/ and SIGMA /sup +/ + K/ sup o/ + pi /sup +/ final states, only the 885-Mev K/sup */ could be definitely verified. (D.C.W.)
