PRODUCTION OF STRANGE PARTICLES BY $pi$$sup +$ - p COLLISIONS AT 2.08 Gev/c

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4638386
The total cross section for strange particle production by 2.05-Bev/c pi /sup +/ on hydrogen was determined to be 0.72 mb, while the SIGMA /sup +/ -- K/sup +/ production was found to be less at 2.08 Bev/c than at 1.39 Bev/c. Angular distributions indicate a strong backward tendency for the SIGMA /sup +/, especially at small angles. The reaction pi /sup +/ + p yields LAMBDA /sup o/ + K/sup +/ + pi /sup o / was strongly dominated by LAMBDA - pi resonance formation at 1385 Mev, although a collection of events about 1600 Mev was also observed. The LAMBDA /sup o/- pi /sup +/ effective mass distribution indicated a very low background at the 1385-Mev Y/sup */. The mass and full width at half maximum of this resonance were determined to be 1382 plus or minus 4 and 28 Mev. The Y/sup */ was also produced predominantly in the backward hemisphere in the center of momentum and support for a spin assignment greater than 1/2 was noted. The SIGMA /sup +/- pi /sup */mass distribution for the SIGMA /sup +/-K/sup o/- pi /sup +/ final state showed a broad peak at 1500 Mev. (D.C.W.)
