CHARGING DEVICE FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4685155
A charging device for pressure-tube reactors is described. The coolant connections are disposed at the upper extremities of the vertical pressure tubes, while the charging and discharging of the fuel elements into and from the tubes are performed from the bottom of tae reactor core. This charging device comprises lifting means adapted to move the elements into and from the pressure tubes, while coupling means are provided to connect the lifting means with the lower extremity of the fuel element, so that the coupling is always locked unless in the uppermost position of the lifting device. The drive mechanism for the device is mounted at a bottom cover piece of the device so that this mechanism can easily be removed from below. The casing of the device is filled with a cooling liquid, suitably water, to ensure the cooling of a fuel element during its transfer. The device is mounted on a gantry and can be tilted out from its vertical direction for transferring fuel elements from and to the charging device. (IIB)
