RADIATION SHIELDING DEVICE WORKING DURING THE CHARGING OPERATION OF THE NUCLEAR FUEL ELEMENTS
A nuclear reactor, having a multitude of vertical channels which are in connection with access holes in a charging floor situated above the reactor pressure vessel, has a charging machine suspended on a horizontally movable carriage. The lower extremity of this charging machine is formed by a tube able to be connected with any charging hole. After this connection is performed, the pressure in the machine is increased to the reactor working pressure, before the plug closing the access hole is removed by handling means mounted in the charging machine. After replacing the burned-out fuel element by a new one and extremity of the machine is closed before it is separated giving access to a shielded basin in which the radioactive burned-out fuel element may be temporarily stocked. The charging floor forms the bottom of a basin which is filled with water so that during all these charging or discharging operations the fuel elements remain under the water surface. (NPO)
