Branching ratio and width of the 2.98 MeV level of Al27

Journal Article · · Physics Letters
The width of the 2.98-Mev (3/2+ level of Al27 was measured using a self-absorption method. Al was used for the target and absorber, while Mg was used as a dummy scatterer. Photons produced by 3.65-Mev electrons on the target where detected by a NaI(Tl) crystal after passing through a Pb absorber. Comparison of transmission values with curves of the transmission computed as a function of total width for different values of the total width and partial width for transition to ground state gave the total width as a function of total width/ partial width. The value obtained for the ratio of partial width/total width disagreed sharply with Van der Leun's value. (D.C.W.)
