IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4684917
A design of a boiling-water reactor using either light or heavy water or a mixture as moderator is patented. Above the core of the reactor is a steam space, in which steam produced by the boiling moderator accumulates. A steam circulating system draws steam from the steam space and circulates it through the reactor core. A valve is provided to divide the steam between a load line and the reactor core, A by-pass value controls the working pressure of the reactor, opening to circulate more steam to the core when the working pressure of the reactor increases, so that the neutron flux is reduced and the pressure falls. The steam recirculated through the reactor core is supplied more to the center of the core than to the periphery to achieve flux flattening. A mechanism is also provided to withdrau the control rods from the core progressively during the life of the core to adjust for burn up. (M.P.G.)
