FLUID TIGHT COUPLINGS FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4684913
A fluid-tight coupling is provided between the charging machine of a nuclear reactor and the end of a reactor channel. For coupling, the machine is brought into a position so that its extensible charging nozzle is in alignment with the reactor channel in question. This reactor channel has at its end stepped cylindrical inner surfaces into which fits the nozzle end piece having also stepped cylindrical inner surfaces. In the coupled state, inner joining surfaces of the channel and of the nozzle end piece lie on a common cylindrical surface. A tubular sleeve slides with two sets of piston rings in this common surface and in an inner cylindrical surface of the nozzle end piece. By increasing or decreasing the fluid pressure in the space between the two piston ring sets the sleeve is moved axially between a position in which it is withdrawn and a position in which one of said sets fits into the inner surface of the channel end.
