The report contains a field evaluation of the effects of firing 100% natural gas and gas/coal cofiring on the thermal and emissions performance of American Electric Power`s Conesville Unit 3. Conesville Unit 3 is a 165 MWe, front wall fired, balance draft boiler originally designed to fire pulverized coal. In 1994 Conesville Unit 3 was retrofitted with Low NOx coal burners with 100% gas firing capability. The firing of 100% gas reduced NOx emissions by 58% to 0.21 lbs/1,000,000 Btu as compared to 100% coal firing with Low NOx burners. Cofiring of 25% natural gas reduced NOx emissions by 10 to 14% and compared to 100% coal firing. The NOx emissions when cofiring was demonstrated to be sensitive to the gas firing location in the furnace. Unburned combustibles in the fly ash were reduced with gas cofiring and demonstrated to be sensitive to the gas firing location in the furnace.
