EFFECTS OF RADIATIONS ON BONE MARROW FUNCTION-RBE OF 200 kvp X-, 15 Mev X-, $sup 60$Co$gamma$-RAY (in Japanese)

Young male rats weighing about 150 g were irradiated over the whole body with 200-kvp x rays, Co/sup 60/ gamma rays, and 15-Mev x rays. To measure Fe/ sup 59/ uptake 1 mu C of Fe/sup 59/ citrate solution was injected into the femoral vein, and whole blood was drawn from another femoral vein at daily intervals. Radioactivity was measured in a well-type scintillation counter, and total red cell radioactivity was expressed as percentage of injected activity. The uptake of Fe/sup 59/ in control groups reached its maximum value of around 80 to 90% of the injected amount on the fifth day after injection. In the irradiated group the uptake was depressed markedly initially and then rose to a constant maximum value at a level lower than that of the control animals. The uptake of Fe/sup 59/ expressed as percentage of control was depressed exponentially as the doses increased. The piasma disappearance time aiso delayed exponentially as the doses increased. All the values of the RBE obtained were in good agreement with those of other authors. It is concluded that the measurement of Fe/sup 59/ uptake provides a sensitive and reasonable quantitative indication of bone marrow depression following irradiation and a suitable indicator for the RBE of bone marrow function.
