Iron turnover rates of rat plasma and erythrocytes were studied 24-hrs after whole-body irradiation with doses of 50 to 400 rads. The RBE values of / sup 60/Co gamma rays and 15-Mev x rays compared with 200 kvp x rays were determined from these bone marrow functions. The decrease of /sup 59/Fe uptake was found to be exponentially related to dose. Radioiron disappearance time was prolonged after irradiation, and the half time was also extended exponentially relative to dose. The /sup 59/Fe concentration in irradiated femoral bone was much larger than that in non-irradiated femoral bone. The RBE values were tabulated and ranged from 0.72 to 0.90. (from NSA of Japan)
