REACTOR INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL PROGRESS REPORT NO. 76

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4682111
The status of the work in progress on reactor instrumentation and control developments is reported. A wafertype drive rod for use with a modified electromagnetic unit was designed, fabricated, and preliminarily tested. A ballcounter circuit was developed and tested. A control for use with an electromagnetic unit was further developed under static switching. A control system for the linear-induction motor used in the circulating-ball reactivity control program was constructed, and a modified five-channel scram bus with improved trip indication was constructed. Other work included the fabrication and testing of a ceramic coated temperature sensor, extension of applications experiments to include control of a furnace by wireless transmission of temperature, and the investigation of several electrical effects pertinent to the program. Testing of fission counters and fission counter components to 1500 deg F, d-c ionization chambers to 1000 deg F, and ionization chamber components to 1200 deg F was continued. Two 1000 deg F gridded ionization chambers were constructed and initial tests were performed. A charged-fragment neutron detector containing a grid structure for capturing secondary electrons was designed and is being constructed. (N.W.R.)
