RADIATION INDUCED GRAFT COPOLYMERIZATION WITH TERNARY MIXTURES OF COMONOMERS (in Japanese)

Experiments on radioinduced graft copolymerization with ternary mixtures of butadene -- styrene - acrylonitrile onto regular viscose rayon and PVA fibers and powders using methanol or methanol--water as a solvent are described and compared with that of binary mixtures of the comonomers. Under favorable conditions of mutual irradiation, grafting proceeded more smoothly with ternary mixtures than with the binary ones. Most experiments were carried out with regular viscose rayon at a comonomer concentration of 80 and a very high rate and degree of grafting were observed near a comonomer composition of butadiene: styrene: acrylonitrile, 10: 40: 50. The behavior of PVA fibers and powders for grafting with ternary mixtures was similar to those of cellulose. Grafting rate curves corresponding to comonomer compositions at which very high degree of grafting was observed reflected apparently the autocatalytic character of the reaction. For comparison with grafting by the mutual irradation technique, experiments were also carried out by pre-irradiation. Generally the degree of grafting was very low. It seems that radicals formed by mutual frradiation in the graft polymer phase contribute to high grafting. Some properties of the graft copolymers were also measured. (P.C.H.)
